To imagine for a moment that He was the Substitute for all the sons of men, and that God, having first punished the Substitute, afterwards punished the sinners themselves, seems to conflict with all my ideas of Divine justice"

Good quote from CHS. It seems pretty hard to reconcile the idea of an omniscient God having His Son die on a cross for people that He knew would never come to faith in Him. If Christ died for all people without exception, then really we are no different than we were before the cross and ultimately our salvation becomes our own work.
